Episode 6 Project Management

Project management is the topic of this week’s episode. We’ll be discussing how to go about organizing the plethora of information surrounding your projects, as well as some helpful tools to aid you in your efforts. Be sure to tune in next time where we will be embarking on a five part series covering the five step process of a design project.

Working with multiple projects is no easy task, so let me attempt to ease the pain by offering some basic techniques on getting organized, managing your time and communicating with your clients. Below is a quick outline of this week’s episode:

  • Organizing your data

  • Great podcast. I’ve been having a struggle finding out what project management solution works best for me. I’ve tried both basecamp and active collab, but maybe I just need to give them a little more time. I’ve been using sidejobtrack.com for awhile and it has been very good, but I need something more.
    Thanks for the advice.

  • Josh – just been getting into your podcasts as of late. All 6 so far have been great – especially as my business partners and myself are young entrepreneurs in the web design field as well. I would have loved a resource like this when I deciding to “take the plunge” and quit my dayjob to commit to join a startup. Still very entertaining to listen to your process, and you’ll have plenty of room to grow and evolve this podcast in the future.

  • Just a short note to wish you continued luck with your freelance endeavours.

This is my first visit to ‘tweak’ and I like what you’re doing.

    Keep it up!

  • Hey,

I love the podcast, very informative, very helpful.

I was listening, and was just about to mention activeCollab, but you beat me to it and mentioned it first (Damn I should finish listening before I post)!

If you’re interested sugarCRM is a much more complicated version of both.

I manage my projects with a whiteboard for the 20,000 feet plan. This cost me about £10 and I use project management tools from the Agile programming camps. I posted a bit about it on my games development blog at http://www.mibgames.co.uk/?p=15 and theres a photo of the whiteboard on there too.

Anyway, I love the podcast, keep up the good work, I purchased the webdevdocs after you recommended them, and am now configuring them for my company.

  • I’ve been using activeCollab for about 5 months now and am loving it. It does some things that Basecamp doesn’t do (i.e. file versioning) that are critical to my work. It isn’t quite as pretty or polished as Basecamp, but the lead developer Ilija is dedicated to making a really complete project management application. Judging from where the product is at now I’m willing to wait a few months until 1.0–at which point we’ve been told it will get a really nice UI upgrade on top of a slew of feature improvements and additions.

He’s recently indicated the product will go to a sort of restricted license, but that there will still be a “free” version. The 0.7 beta is pretty stable, it just lacks some features, so I’d imagine there will be a fork of it in the near future.

Regardless, if you’re comfortable setting up a PHP/MySQL app and don’t want to pay for Basecamp, aC is most definitely worth your time.

  • I used Basecamp for quite awhile before feeling like I needed a few more features. For budget and task tracking, I’ve found dotProject (also and open-source solution) to be very good. It offers several levels of client interaction and you can choose what clients can and can’t see. It takes a little getting used to, but is very customizable if you know your way around PHP templates.

Thanks for another great episode. I enjoy hearing from people who deal with the same things we come up against every day.

  • Josh, awesome podcast, however the opensource resource is outdated, they are charging for it now. Do you have another suggestion for an opensource project management resource?
